A federal copyright is like the proverbial sword and shield in the hands of its owner. As a sword, it arms the owner with the exclusive rights to reproduce and adapt the work and to distribute and display his reproductions and adaptations. As a shield, it safeguards the owner from those who attempt to usurp his rights.
